Hi Reader!

One chapter of my book "Guide to efficient photorealism", that I am writing right now, is about one of the most important and probably most overlooked workflows in in CGI: references.

Never begin working without references!

In our quest to recreate reality digitally, we embrace photorealism, but it's a bit tricky because everyone sees things differently. Reality, shaped by our experiences, is unique to each of us. Yet, there are some basics we agree on, like colors. Still, capturing objects from memory is tough because our perceptions are personal.

That's why artists used to paint from life or photos – references are key! They help not only with technical stuff but also with style and vibe. By collecting and studying references, artists can craft their own unique creations while learning from others.

In my book I will talk about three different types of references and how to use them, to bring your shaders and modelling to a superior level.

The best, the alternative and bread and butter references

Having your subject in front of you is crucial for studying and recreating it accurately, with the option to create a digital twin through photogrammetry. While high-resolution cameras help capture details, physically examining objects provides the best understanding of form, material, and color. Experimenting with different lighting conditions further enhances perception. Continuously referencing real objects while working ensures accuracy and minimizes later debates about realism. When real-life objects aren't accessible, utilizing photos becomes necessary, a topic I'll explore further in my book. And then there are references from the net.

Either way, in my experience as an Artist AND as a team leader, I noticed that we humans tend to work from our minds and memories and that can lead to unrealistic results.

So before putting all your energy into something with closed eyes, open them and gather your references😀

I hope this didn't come across too teacher-like. I just think, it's a really important topic for us a Digital Artists 😇

I appreciate you. Have a fantastic day!

Warm Regards,

Manuel

PS: This book is a lot of work. Not only will it have written workflows but also a lot of samples. I am trying to find out, if all the time and energy is worth it and if there is a real interest. Would you do me a favor and hit reply to tell me if this would be a thing for you? I'd really appreciate it!
